Submission: Kate Carr

Kate Carr is an experimental sound artist based in Sydney. She has released work on Retinascan, 442 Music, New Weird Australia, Pertin-Nce and Standard Klik Music. She has an upcoming release on the German netlabel Resting Bell and is currently working on an environmental sound project called Listen to the Weather (www.listentotheweather.com) for the Ear to the Earth festival in New York.

Of the piece, Kate says: “Despite its status as one of Australia’s most polluted rivers, the 23 kilometre Cooks River is a beacon for the Inner West of Sydney and a haven for bird life in the city. It is a study in the adaptibility and vulnerability of eco-systems and a testament to the enthusiasm of residents determined to see this river, and its collection of concrete-banked tributries, thrive again. Pelicans, egrets and ibis are regularly seen along it, negotiating collections of plastic bottles and bags to feed, and as the water quality of the river continues to improve more and more birds are able to eke out a life on its banks. The Cooks is a vivid example of the artificial and the natural, the regenerated and the ruined. Part of its original course has been completed altered to make way for Sydney airport; at some points the river becomes merely a concrete canal, at others it is over 20 meters wide and lined with mangroves. It winds past industrial factories, hobby farms, a golf course and music venues as it makes its way to Botany Bay. This piece is based on a series of hydrophone recordings taken from sections of the river at Marrickville and Tempe where I used to live.”

Submission: Sam Price

sam-price-470

Today’s submission is titled ‘Until The Rain’, from Sam Price.

Sam notes: “The track is an ambient mix of synthesis and acoustic instrumentation, both removed from their natural state through varying degrees of subsequent processing. Living in Melbourne, this reflects my experience of ‘the land’. There is a yearning for wide-open spaces but my daily existence is essentially urban, a paradox I can only resolve temporarily.”

Bio: Sam Price is a drummer/composer who has a longstanding practice in sonic manipulation. His work fuses generative digitalia with abstracted instrumentation, preserving the overtone series and ambiences of real events that have been caressed and/or tortured into something new. During live performance, with no preconception of form, the compositional process is led by the timbre/sound at hand – the net result sounds like organic machinery. Originally hailing from the UK, Sam feels his adoptive home of Australia offers a uniquely creative environment.

Submission: Peter Whitehouse

Our first submission for the ‘The Sound of Red Earth’ compilation comes from Peter Whitehouse from Brisbane, QLD.  This is what Peter had to say about his submission:

“Early morning, mid July 2003, a dawn chorus greets listeners on the main track of Canarvon Gorge on the way to a rock formation called “The Amphitheater”. In the winter months, crows come from miles around to a sheltered, leafy retreat and dominate the birdlife in the area. Their characteristic calls are to me what the outback sounds like, a calling from the red heart.  This is a field recording taken by Peter Whitehouse (wonko) - teacher, author, occasional musician and geek.”

CALL OUT FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR ‘THE SOUND OF RED EARTH’ COMPILATION

Kaldor Public Art Projects are currently seeking submissions from sound artists and musicians for a free, digital compilation to be released later this year.  The compilation is aimed at framing Vitiello’s work from ‘The Sound of Red Earth’ in a wider context, one that seeks to explore the prevalent themes of isolation, remoteness, distance, nature, environment and ‘earth’ through sound and music.

For more information, visit the ‘Artist Submissions’ page - closing date for submissions is 30th September 2010.

THE SOUND OF RED EARTH

Internationally celebrated US sound and media artist Stephen Vitiello will create two extraordinary new art projects in Sydney this August, forming the 20th Kaldor Public Art Project.

Vitiello’s major work, to be installed in the historic former Brickworks at Sydney Park, is entitled The Sound of Red Earth, and is the result of extensive sound recordings captured by the artist throughout the Kimberley region in Western Australia.

Over the past year, the artist has made two week-long field trips to the Kimberley to record bird and animal calls in freshwater billabongs, the sounds of tidal flows and marine life. He has even captured the frequency of the starlight and translated it into sound. Vitiello’s many recordings detail the natural life and environment of the region. Layered and recombined, they will become new soundscapes for his installation in the old brick-making kilns at Sydney Park. Resonating with sound and light, the kilns will be transformed into immersive environments, evoking the remote Australian landscape. Each composition will reflect a different focus: wind, water and native wildlife.

The historic Sydney Park area was first cleared for agricultural use by a marine sergeant of the first fleet and has since played a significant role in the development of the city. In the 1840s, clay was extracted and brick-making began on the site, casting the bricks used to build early Sydney suburbs and its industry. The site has recently been re-developed by the City to create a vast and vibrant community parkland and the old brick - brick-making kilns will now be officially open to the public for the first time with this new installation.
